Family Catechesis
Queen of Heaven parish offers the option of a Family Catechesis program that meets once a month on a Sunday after the 8:00 Mass. This type of program benefits families who prefer to further their faith formation together instead of having the children attend a separate program. It is also helpful for those who have children in the traditional programs that all meet on separate days. Our family program is loosely based on the Generations of Faith program. Mrs. Maloney, D.R.E., and Mrs. Kishbaugh, C.R.E., facilitate the Family Program. Various speakers will be brought in as appropriate.
The sessions run for about one hour and forty-five minutes, are usually held on the first Sunday of the month, start in October and end in April. There is a monthly handout with suggestions for activities to be done at home between sessions. Sometimes there is “homework” to be brought to the following session, or a project. Each year there is a different theme and each month focuses on a different topic relating to the theme or to the liturgical year. This year our theme is The New Testament.
The students also receive a grade level text book for review at home so they are sure to learn to grade level requirements of the Diocesan Education Department guidelines.
This program replaces the traditional weekly religious education sessions however, Confirmation candidates are required to attend the Confirmation process even if they attend the Family Program. There is a $50.00 fee per family.
It’s a fun program; it’s a wonderful opportunity to spend some quality time with your children; it helps everyone to become more comfortable sharing and talking about their faith. Sometimes we may have a session separate for children during the program time, depending on the topic. If not, everyone stays together for the entire session. This depends on the theme or the year and the topic covered each month.
DATES AND FOR THE FAMILY PROGRAM ARE AS FOLLOWS:
OCTOBER 3, 2010, NOVEMBER 7, 2010 AND DECEMBER 5, 2010 between the 9:00 and 12:00 Masses. We have "coffee social" right after Mass and the session begins at 10:15 and ends at 11:45.
Please note the new time for our Family Program AS OF JANUARY 9, 2011 due to the change in the Sunday Mass schedule beginning on January 2, 2011. The new Sunday Mass times will be: 8:00, 9:30 and 11:15 a.m.
This change will cause us to alter our schedule somewhat. We will gather after the 8:00 Mass (around 8:45 or so) for our usual social. Sessions will run from about 9:15 to 11:00. In that way, you could attend either the 8:00 Mass before the Family Program or the 11:15 Mass after it.
The 2011 dates are: JANUARY 9, 2011*, FEBRUARY 6, 2011, MARCH 6, 2011 and MARCH 27, 2011* with the last session being APRIL 10, 2011* *these dates are not the first Sunday of the month
